Practice Areas

Kathleen Miller practices in the areas of estate planning and administration, elder law and non-profit business law. Kathy represents individuals and families in all aspects of estate planning, including wills, trusts and associated documents such as healthcare proxies, living wills and powers of attorney. She represents heirs and executors through all aspects of estate administration and taxation, and provides assistance to families with guardianship and conservatorship issues. In all instances, Kathy works work closely with clients to understand their particular needs and help craft solutions that meet those needs.

Kathy has worked extensively with public and non-profit entities and provides general counsel services, including incorporations, Federal tax exemption qualifications, dissolution/liquidation, and other operational matters. She also works with Boards and managers on policy development, strategic planning, prevention of harassment, including sexual harassment, for their organizations.

Professional Experience

Kathy began her legal career in 1977, clerking with Chief Justice Allan Hale of the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and then joined the staff of the Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts (LACCM). For five years she was director of the Elder Law Unit, where she represented elders with a variety of problems including health and disability issues, probate and nursing home issues. She conducted community education for seniors on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, wills and estate planning.

In 1981, she became Executive Director of LACCM, supervising a staff of 40 in two offices, including the Elder Law Unit. In addition to supervisory duties, Kathy was responsible for grant writing, financial management and community relations.

Kathy also served as Assistant Attorney General to the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare's Medicaid Unit (Now MassHealth).

Community and Professional Activities

For several years, child rearing and community activity took precedence over law practice for Kathy. She is presently completing her 12 th year as an elected member of the Belmont School Committee and has been a member of the collective bargaining team for nine years, using collaborative bargaining methods to negotiate workable agreements under difficult circumstances. She has served on the boards of a number of community organizations, including Belmont Against Racism (co-founder), The New England Alliance of Multiracial Families (co-founder and president for 2 years) and Children's Village Day Care Center (President for 2 years). My community work has provided me with a wealth of experience in organizational problem solving, policy development and dispute resolution.
